Right or wrong, I don't think Grier is going anywhere after the season. I believe he has at least another year left on his contract and I don't think USD will eat it.
He's actually done a pretty nice job with the team this year, in-season. They have definitely gotten better as the year has progressed.
What I think he needs to get better at is managing the entire program.
A big test in my mind will be how well he recruits for the balance of the 2012 schoarships. When the year started we only had one scholarship to give (Norris)and they signed Trey Guidry. We had a couple of other good players in-line to come to USD, according to the recruitting websites, who went elswhere when we filled the scholarship with Guidry (Tim Derksen to USF and Delante Dunklin to UCSB).
Then he dismissed Gabriel and Mackie (the timing was terrible as the early signing period just finished) and Vozzola decided to transfer. Not much you can do about the transfer, but to me, and this is what I mean by managing the entire program, the dismissals came at the worst possible time.
So now there are 3 scholarships to give and most of the solid mid-majors recruits have already committed. It will be really interesting to see how he fills them. The good news is that according to the recruitting websites (Scout & ESPN) we are involved with some pretty good 2013 talent. But who wants to wait that long?!
I will say this - there hasn't been this much to be positive about with this program for the last 3 years. I like that we have improved as the year has progressed and I like the way the freshmen are playing - they are going through growing pains at times this year but it bodes well for the next 3 years.
