I couldn't believe he sat BJ either. It was obvious at the 5 minute mark that we were not going to win the game. Our next game is on the road - this has been a tough season and anything positive would be a huge boost. You're telling me he can't take a time out and let the team know that we are feeding BJ the ball so he can break the record at home? I really can't believe it.
While I'm at, here are a couple of other things that have bothered me lately about Grier's coaching:
1. I've seen a number of games where were trail by 5-10 points with 3-5:00 minutes left and we continue to walk the ball up the court. We act like we are playing with the lead when we are behind. There is no sense of urgency at all.
2. Grier does not seem to want to change his offense to tailor to the players he has. Whatever we are running is not working. 43 total points with no one in double figures tonight.
3. Grier's sideline antics don't bother me (I don't really like it but it doesn't bother me all that much), but it was obvious tonight that there were people in the crowd who were sick of it. One dude was screaming at him to knock it off.
4. How does Ken Rancifer only play 8 minutes in this game?! He's the only one bringing any spark of the bench.
5. How does Ryan Harbour play 11 minutes in this game?! 11 minutes!
I saw Ky Snyder across the way and he didn't look too comfortable.
What OTHER comments? Any negative comment about Grier I've uttered (acehole [that's probably the one, but i believe it and i really like my creative misspelling], or disrespectful, or buffoon) I stand by, and I'll say it again: he is a disrespectful, unrelentingly negative presence on the sidelines during games. he may be a GREAT basketball mind (which i used to think, not so much right now) but, sorry, i can tell when players are NOT responding the personality of their coach. worse, imo, these kids lose their mojo for the guy as the season goes on, and their play gets worse as a result.
I have seen virtually every home game of the Bill Grier era. I have never even seen the guy smile at one of his players during a game, I've never seen him even look RELAXED, and I am not making this up. How do you expect your team to flourish when your example from the sidelines during games goes against everything you teach your kids to do in the game: emotionally out of control, disrespectful, always negative, glaring, stomping, snarling...he is tight as hell and teams are ALWAYS a reflection of their coach.
We are the tightest team I can imagine in D-1, I kid you not. They look like they are afraid to take their next step or dribble or shot. They look like a team afraid to make mistakes. That is a sign of a very anxious and tense group. Wonder where they pick that up from?
And I agree with Dogpatch about the offense. It's a confused mess, I don't even see the purpose of it with this group. We could run a modified-Princeton offense with this team and score more. This team has to overacheive, which means you have to play to their strenghts and fill them with CONFIDENCE. They are filled with anything but right now.
And Rancifer, Harbour, I don't get ANY of it. His sub patterns are very capricious and tend to seem kind of personal. Let's be honest, Harbour makes Ginty look like Allen Iverson. He's a nice kid who works hard, but he cannot contribute much of anything at this level.
"The first year and half all anyone here could do is say Grier was the next coming of God...now he is suddenly the worst coach and person ever.....what is wrong with some of you? Talk about jumping off the bandwagon..."
I'd just like to say I'm not in this crowd.
Also, Grier isn't going anywhere guys. He's in year 2 of 5. USD isn't exactly printing money right now. You are AT LEAST getting 2 more years from him....unless he leaves for another job.
Good luck with that.
He is in year 3 of 5 buddy.
i think he is talking about Grier's contract perhaps which might be correct. Year 3 overall but if he signed an extension he is only in the second year of that contract whatever length it might be....
Yes, Very simple math.
The first deal was blown up. New deal was signed, which started a new 5 year deal. THUS, year 2 of 5 of the current contract. I didn't think I needed to explain that.
Well next year would be year three, which would mean we would only have to buy out 2 years of his contract.
I say sell the $10,000 palm trees the school recently purchased and if Grier messes up next year buy him out and hire a can't miss candidate.
As long as guys like Devin Ginty and Ryan Harbour are getting more minutes then guys like McCollum, Miles and Rancifer then I will continue to ride the GET RID OF GRIER BANDWAGON
If you really think that USD will "Buy Grier out" next year if he "messes up" then you are out of your mind....not going to happen.
Wooderson your an idiot. You are so negative you are a cancer on this board. Get lost.
Blue you should shut up too if you are going to continue the fire Grier lunacy.
guys/gals--
this is pretty much the only place for toreros fans to have open discussions. we are a small group of people who actually care about our school. let's try to get rid of calling each other names and belittling people just because they don't see things the way you do.
now...back to posting--
grier is not getting bought out. as much as some might want that to happen, it most likely will not. and the same goes for the possibility of him taking a job somewhere else. it would just put him in a spot where expectations at the new job would be crazy high compared to where they are at usd. he is just comfortable here and his salary/contract are healthy...simple as that.
just my opinion of course...
Take a job elsewhere? Why would anyone want Grier after this seasons 20-losses? Can you explain that one to me?
For all the others that don't think Snyder would buy out Grier, I think you will be surprised. I think Snyder realizes at this point, after back-to-back disappointing...scratch that....really disappointing seasons, that Grier and his antics may not have been best for this school after all.
Now I am giving him a chance next year. I have been very positive and upbeat about the 2010 recruiting class, and if we add another big like Joakim or Okonji, then we really do have a bright future. I just want to see these freshman play now, but too bad he have to sit through this terrible season.\
Sorry I am not going to pat Grier on the back, I am going to tell it how it is. I am mad as hell as a Torero fan right now for the effort our team is showing, and for Grier's lack of ability to realize players like Ginty and Harbour are taking away valuable minutes from our freshman.
I agree with jumpman22. All of us are frustrated - but each one of us needs to keep in mind we all want the same thing - USD to be successful. Name calling, and personal jabs need to stop - each person including myself will be held accountable. Anything close to questionable will be grounds for action and I don't want have to delete posts or suspend accounts.
No matter how frustrated you are keep it within boundaries...
